Embryo Sac Development and Double Fertilization in Plants: Development of Embryo Sac, Types
Development of Embryo Sac
- Mega-gametogenesis, another name for the process by which the female gametophyte (embryo sac) grows inside the ovule of flowering plants, is referred to as embryo sac development.
- One megaspore mother cell (MMC) is initiated at the apex of each nucellus in flowering plants like Arabidopsis. The MMC creates four haploid megaspores during meiosis, but only one of these matures into a functioning megaspore; the other three degenerate.
- A syncytial femal…

Embryo Sac Development and Double Fertilization in Plants: Formation of Central Cell, Double Fertilization
Formation of Central Cell
- The central cell is distinct from other gametophytic cells due to its central location, enormous volume, two polar nuclei, cytoplasm, and organelles that are inherited from the growing syncytial gametophyte.
- It also has a big central vacuole at the chalazal end. In Arabidopsis, the polar nuclei fuse prior to fertilization, but not in cereals.
- As a result, the central cell in most angiosperms is homodiploid an…
