Cellular Organization: Brief Note on Cell and Its Outer Protective Layer, Plasma Membrane, Fluid Mosaic Model, Formation of Thermodynamically Favoured Enclosed Lipid Bilayers

Cellular Organization

Brief Note on Cell and Its Outer Protective Layer

  • The name cell is derived from a Latin word which means a small room given by Robert Hooke in 1665. A cell is an enclosed compartment having an internal environment different to that of the external. When there is something enclosed within a compartment it needs to be safeguarded from harsh environments which invites the need to build strong walls around it leaving few doors for its communication with th…

Cellular Organization: Formation of Micelle, Synthetic Bilayers, Phospholipid Movement, Molecules Aiding Membrane Integrity

Cellular Organization

Formation of Micelle

  • When phospholipid has one fatty acid side chain in aqueous environment, it is also forced to hide the hydrophobic tails within leaving the polar heads to interact with the water. We can assume a ball formed by arranging ice cream cones where, the cream on the top is polar head and the cone is its tail.
  • We can observe the structural constraint of the lipid bilayer and micelle given with a black outline in the following figure.
Formati…
