- According to Buddhism, the law of change is universal neither man nor any other being, animate or inanimate is exempted from it. It is commonly believed by many schools of Indian Philosophy that in a man there is an abiding substance called the soul or atma which persists through changes that overcome the body. It exist before birth and after death it migrates from one body to another. Buddha denies the existence of such soul.

The concept of Atman
- Self is atman, it is the universal, transcendental, immanent subject.
- According to Chandogya Upanishad- air, water, earth constitute Jiva atman together with the principle of the infinite.
- According to Taitarya Upanishad- several elements are found in the nature of individual/Panca-koshas.
- According to Katha Upanishad- Atman is the ultimate reality or the highest reality.
- According to Prasna Upanishad- As birds goes to tree as their abode, atman goes to the supreme self.
