Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR): Genomic Imprinting

Genomic Imprinting

Mendelian genetics holds that everyone inherits two copies of their genes: one from their mother and one from their father. A gene is usually “active” on both copies, so no matter whether it is inherited from the mother or the father, an allele will have the same effect on the offspring՚s phenotype.

However, sometimes only one of these two copies is active (or functional), and the other is silenced. When this happens, we call it genomic imprinting!

Genomic…

Incomplete Dominance and Co – Dominance

Concept of Dominance

In genetics, Dominance is a relationship between alleles of one gene. In order to understand the concept of the dominance of alleles, we need to know more about genes. Heterozygous alleles carry different information over the opposite, there are often two reasons:

  • Either it is non- functional
  • Is less active than the normal allele

The law of dominance is not always found to be correct as there are many examples where …
